GAIL GUTHRIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Hi, I'm Gail

Photography for me has seemed to be always around from my parents who started with a Box Brownie, to various film cameras. My earliest memories are of looking at photos from my Great Grand parents collection, many of which were taken by Bert Saw with a Glass Plate camera. The quality of these is outstanding.

Just after Dave & I married we had a polaroid camera which we used for mostly taking photos of the kids (we have 4).

From there I progressed to my first SLR, a Pentax MZ-5 film camera, with an Aspherical 28-80mm lens with macro switch. I still have and use this lens. My next big purchase was a 80-300mm lens which I got to photograph the Antarctic from a 12 hour flight in a Boeing Jumbo .

I then moved to my first DSLR, a Pentax K100, then to a K10. I now have a K1M11 which I am very happy with.

For me photography is both a way of recording my travels and also an inspiration for my textile art. This results in transforming the photo to either embroidery or manipulated fabric pieces.

I love how photography is a record and a memory booster, as well as bringing joy.

My Favorite Places

Walpole Nornalup National Park, Western Australia

I live within this park and the places to photograph are endless. This is Chatham Island off Mandalay Beach.

Central Australia

The desert regions of Australia are fascinating and always changing especially as the light and seasons change.

Kata Tjuta / The Olgas, west of Uluru, south of Alice Springs, NT.

Pilbara Region of Western Australia

I love visiting the Pilbara region - our go to for Winter with its ideal climate at that time of year as well as stunning landscapes.

Sunrise over the abandoned cattle yards on Ex-Meentheena, east of Marble Bar.

What Photography Means To Me

Photography is a part of my life

Photography helps me look at the world in a different way. Because of photography, I notice shapes and patterns that nobody else seems to notice, and I want to photograph them! I seem to pick out leading lines, or naturally occurring frames in the landscape, and I often pull out my phone to take a quick snapshot. I tend to look at many scenes and the natural way with the view as to how I can transform it into a textile representation. Therefore the textures of the images can be very important.

I truly believe that photography helps me enjoy my surroundings more. I have a new appreciation for the beauty of the earth, and I love sharing that beauty with others through my photos. More than just an artistic outlet, photography has become a way for me to be present, mindful, and more deeply connected to the world around me.

My favorite Photo

I have a difficult time choosing my favorite photo. It depends on my mood, and what I have taken recently.

This photo is from Hilltop Lookout, Walpole overlooking the Frankland River and Nornalup Inlet to the southern ocean.

I find that the photo that might be my favorite today will change by next month, and that is because I tend to often get attached to the most recent photos I have taken, but like this one, it can take me back to previous times.

No doubt I will soon find another photo to show here.
